Diagnostic Testing
Vestibular rehabilitation will improve balance and
stability. We use medical history and our findings from a
physical exam as a basis for ordering diagnostic tests to assess
the function of the vestibular system and to rule out
alternative causes of symptoms.
Once Vestibular Rehabilitation therapy has begun,
it is easy to retest and confirm whether or not your stability has improved!!
- VNG- The VNG is for observing, recording, and
the playback of eye movements. It allows simultaneous subjective observations of
patients eye movements and objective collection and
analysis of eye movement waveforms during vestibular testing
and rehabilitation.
- The CAPS (comprehensive assessment of postural
systems) is a program that will in seconds, document your
body mass index and balance/stability score, expressed as normal, mildly
impaired, moderately impaired, severely impaired or profoundly
impaired. If your score is impaired, Dr. Ralston will
develop a Vestibular rehabilitation program for your needs. Vestibular
Rehabilitation is important as therapy for:
- Dizziness
- Vertigo
- Balance/Coordination
- Tinnitus
- Fall Prevention
- Athletic Performance
- Scoliosis and other
functional and structural asymmetries

Balance as a Sixth Sense
A healthy person usually takes his or her sense of balance for granted. Most people don't find it difficult to walk across a gravel driveway, transition from walking on the sidewalk to the grass, or get out of bed in the middle of the night without stumbling or feeling unsteady.
The ability to balance depends on correct sensory input from:
- Eyes
- Muscles & joints
- Vestibular system (ears)
All of the sensory input concerning balance, from the eyes, from the muscles and joints, and from the two sides of the vestibular system, is sent to the brain stem, where it is sorted out and integrated with contributions from other parts of the brain.
